The gel is put in a pressure vessel, which increases temperature and pressure to transform the gel's liquid into a supercritical liquid. Surface tension is no longer present, as the interface between gas and liquid disappears. The pressure vessel then releases the supercritical fluid, producing a low-density, porous and disordered material.
