What's the meaning of 316 Stainless Steel?
Sometimes, alloys are added to steel in order to enhance the desired properties. It is a marine quality stainless steel known as Type 316, is resistant to certain types of corrosive environments.
There are many types made of stainless steel. There are several common types, including L, F, N, and H variants. Each variant is different and each is used for a different purpose. L means that 316L steel is a carbon content below 316.
312, 316, and 316L Stainless Steel Common Quality
Although they're not as similar to Type 304 commonly found in the food industry, the Type 316 and 316L both have better resistance to corrosion and are more durable when exposed to high temperatures. They also cannot be hardened with heat treatments and can be easily bent and stretched.
A distinction between the 316 and 316L Stainless Steel
316L stainless steel is less carbon content than the 316. However, despite its reduced carbon level, 316L is very similar to 316 nearly in every way. It is priced similarly, while both are extremely durable and resistant, making them ideal for difficult-to-reach situations.
For projects that require lots or welding may be a superior choice as 316 is more susceptible to corrosion from welding over those using 316L (corrosion on the inside of the welding). But, the 316 is able to be annealed to withstand the attenuation of welding. Additionally, it is a appropriate stainless steel for high temperature, high corrosion projects this is why it is so well-liked for marine and construction.
It is not clear if 316 or 316L is the most affordable option. The 304 is similar to the 304L but the cost is much lower. This isn't as sturdy as the 317 and 317L that are more durable, with more molybdenum and have better durability overall.
