Zirconia Ceramics Properties and Uses

Article: What's Zirconia Ceramic?

Zirconia ZrO2 can be described as the crystalline oxide in zirconium. Its colour is typically monoclinic and black. Zirconia, one of its most important materials, is very popular.

Zirconia (a form of ceramic material) is used to make medical devices. It also has many other advanced mechanical capabilities that allow it to be used in different industries.

There is no way to tell if zirconia really is ceramic. Its structure has similar characteristics as many ceramic materials. This allows zirconia combine the inherent strength of metals with ceramic's biocompatibility.

Most common zirconia grades

Yttria sandstone zirconia (Y - PSZ)

Youtria partially stabilized zirconia, or Y-PSZ (Yttria partial stabilized Zirconia) can be doped with the yttrium (Y2O3) stabilizer. This stabilizer will enhance the material’s internal grain structure. This material is finer than all other ceramics and has the best bending strength. It's very resistant to impact and wear as well as having low thermal conductivity. These characteristics make it a good substitute for most metals. The materials toughness is due to the inclusion of ytriumoxide (Yttria), which transforms and toughens them. A material that is under stress will have a crystal structure change from tetragonal or monoclinic. As a result, it will show a 3-5% increase on the volume. By increasing the volume, cracks shrink, limiting their potential to grow or propagate. This is the reason for high flexibility and low stress fatigue.

Magnesium or partially stabilised zirconia.

Zirconia doped in magnesium oxide (MgO), can cause compression of the interior matrix. However this structure is cubic. M-PSZ does not experience phase migration, so it has better resistance to heat and humidity. M-PSZ maintains its strength, even under high temperature and humidity conditions.

Zirconia-ceramics Processing

Zirconia can be transformed into complex geometric shapes easily using its raw blanks. However, about 20% of the main material shrinks due to the process of sintering required for densification. These shrinkages make it impossible for pre-sintering to be within very precise tolerances.

When processing sintered materials, the use of diamond tools is required in order to meet very tight tolerances. The diamond coated grinding wheel / tool is used to cut the material into desired shapes. It can take a long time and be expensive due to the hardness and inherent toughness of this material.
